In the United States alone, there are over 205 million people who use cellular phone. On an average, people replace or upgrade their phones every 18 months. Today, there are over 650 million retired phones and chargers and yes most of them are still working. What about those phones which end up in the trash? Well they end up in the landfill and the toxic components like lead, mercury and cadmium which can be harmful to us. Did you ever ask yourself how to recycle phone?

Cellular phones house valuable materials like gold, silver and platinum. Gold is used on the mobile phone’s circuit board. Collecting one ounce of gold can generate tons of toxic wastes. Chargers on the other hand contain copper which is way less valuable but it can still be put into use. If you recycle phone, you are actually helping companies produce less materials needed for the manufacture of cellular phones. You can always take your phone to your electrical store so they can get the parts that are still working, in this way, the parts can be of better use. Rebuilt phones can be brought back into the market and be sold at a much cheaper price. People who can’t afford to buy newer models can take advantage of this.

When you recycle phone, you’re not only helping the environment but other people as well. The valuable components taken out from your old phone can be reused and then the rest of the parts can be disposed which in turn causes minimal environmental damage unlike if the whole phone will be thrown away. The cadmium content of just 3 phones is more than enough to pollute a huge swimming pool while the plastic can take about 1000 years before it biodegrades. You can recycle phone by either selling it or turning it over to non-profit organizations for charity or you can sell it to an electronics store so they can either fix it, make it work so somebody else can use it or they can get some valuable and working parts from the broken phone and use them to rebuild another unit.
