How To Recycle Your Phone

Mobile networks will often entice you to upgrade to a newer handset because it keeps you on the network for at least another 12 months. Many people will get a better deal by shopping around online for a new deal and others will get fed up of their old mobile phone and just buy a new one.

That means a lot of old mobile phones out there gathering dust in drawers and cupboards that could be put to good use.

Many charities now have a mobile phone collection service where you can dump your old mobile. They can then either give them to poorer countries to be used or sell them on to companies that strip them down.

Even if your mobile isn’t working it may be repairable cheaply by swapping bits around. If it isn’t any good at all then at least you know that the batteries are being disposed of properly, rather than leaving dangerous chemicals in land fill sites around the world.

It’s a shame in some ways that mobile phones have become such a throw away commodity in the richer countries, because when you think of the technology involved in a mobile phone it is quite amazing.

Many mobile phone companies subsidise the handset and make the money back on line rental or on calls, so you never appreciate the true value of your mobile phone. I used to work in a mobile phone shop and you would be amazed at the amount of people that allow there mobiles to get wet in the rain or lose them because they left it on the table in some bar somewhere.

Please don’t undervalue your old phone. It could be real use to somebody less fortunate than yourself.
