Recycle Phones For Money

Every year, there are millions of phones being thrown away. Most of these phones are still in good working condition and some can still be fixed. Most of us would change phones every now and then just because a better version came out of the market. In the United States, about 20% of mobile phones are recycled and in the UK, it’s about 10%. What happens to the 80 or 90% of these phones? Well they end up in landfills polluting our environment. Phones contain cadmium, mercury and lead which can end up penetrating the water that we drink or on various food resources. The good news is, the environmental damage caused by mobile phones can be lessened only if we know how to recycle phones. Yes you heard it right, there’s such a thing called “phone recycling”.

Today, there are over 650 million retired phones and chargers and yes most of them are still working. What about those phones which end up in the trash? On average, most people replace their phones every 18 months to 2 years. Considering how many cell phone users there are in the world, that’s quite a few phones just laying around not being used anymore! Whether they are broken or not, the old phones wind up in a box somewhere in the basement, completely forgotten and never to be used again.

Not only is this a waste of space, but in many cases old phones and old batteries can be hazardous to the environment if left lying around. Because they are harmful, they cannot be disposed of like the rest of our garbage. So what can we do with our old phones?

Cell phones need not necessarily be disposed of or destroyed when they succumb to the pressures of daily use. Most of the cell phones will give in and breakdown after a span of an average of 18 months. More than 130 million cell phones are thrown away each year in the United states alone. This leaves us asking ourselves how many more are thrown away in other countries in total.

In response to this situation which may be termed as a wastage of raw materials, federal laws that emphasize that we recycle cell phones have been enforced but unfortunately we are turning a deaf ear to them, much to our own disadvantage and in large scale.
