Did you know that there are over 150 million used phones sitting in drawers, closets and cabinets all over the United States? What about in other countries? Well there’s definitely more! Unfortunately, only 20% of these phones are being recycled which means the remaining 80% are just there right in your home waiting to be put in a better use. Before we learned how to recycle cell phone, we only had two options and these are throwing it away or just let it sit in your drawer letting it lose its value as time goes by. Every single time that you dump a phone in the garbage, you also dump part of your hard-earned money. Didn’t you ever think that there is something that you can do to help alleviate this problem? You might say what problem am I talking about?! Well to start with, wireless devices contain harmful substances such as Cadmium, Beryllium, Lead, Arsenic, Mercury and Palladium. These are horrible stuff to be dumping into the environment in such huge quantities.

We’re all guilty of throwing away a cell phone once or twice. Can you imagine how many cell phones are dumped in landfills every single day? Or how many working cell phones are there which are just lying in the attic floor, cabinet or drawer? There are hundreds or even thousands of cellular phone models in the market today and it’s often hard to make a choice. How many times in a year that we change cell phones just because there’s a trendier model? On average, most people replace their phones every 18 months to 2 years. Considering how many cell phone users there are in the world, that’s quite a few phones just laying around not being used anymore! Whether they are broken or not, the old phones wind up in a box somewhere in the basement, completely forgotten and never to be used again.

Not only is this a waste of space, but in many cases old phones and old batteries can be hazardous to the environment if left lying around. Because they are harmful, they cannot be disposed of like the rest of our garbage. So what can we do with our old phones?
